Dong-Myung Kim studied composition with Prof. Young-Min Jin at Kyungpook National University. His studies focused on the formal aspects of music and the musicalization of natural phenomena, and he won awards in competitions, receiving prizes in the Yeongnam Composition Competition, the Contemporary Music Society in Busan (Hyanhsinhui) Composition Competition, and the Seonsori Electronic Music Competition for Young Composers.

He then moved to Berlin to study composition under Helmut Zapf, where he developed an interest in instrumental extended techniques. Later, he continued his studies with Marc Sabat and Prof. Daniel Ott at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin), focusing on Just-Intonation (JI), Aleatoric music, and Music theater. During this time, his compositions were premiered at the Randspiele Contemporary Music Festival in Zepernick, as well as at Haus Quillo in Prenzlau. Additionally, his piece "Flower Blossom with Wavering" for soprano and ensemble was selected for the 130th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Korea and France, organized by 2e2m with Universal Music Paris and published by Durand Edition. He graduated with a thesis titled "Die urtonale Sonorität mit The Extended Helmholtz-Ellis JI Pitch Notation - Analyse der Plainsound-Sinfonie von Wolfgang von Schweinitz."

Continuing his studies in Germany, he pursued composition Meisterklasse at University of Music Würzburg (HfM Würzburg) under Prof. Andreas Dohmen. String Quartet No.1 was performed at the Tage der Neuen Musik and broadcasted on Bavarian Public Radio (BR2). Also “Shimyon" for soprano and ensemble was selected as a finalist for the New Classics Composition Competition in Moscow.

After completing his studies, he resided in Berlin, engaging in various artistic activities. His piece "Siseon" for piano was selected through a Call for Score at the Donaueschingen Music Festival 2019, and live recordings were broadcasted on radio stations Europe inclunding SWR2, ORF2 and SRF2. He also received  the 3rd prize at the 5th Younghi Pagh-Paan Composition Prize and commissions from the Berlin Korean Contemporary Music Festival and the ensemble unitedberlin. 

Furthermore, his operas "In the Fields Taken Away," "Chunhyangjeon," and "The Scent of Spring" were performed at the Daegu International Opera Festival. His orchestral pieces were also selected for the 11th and 14th ARKO Contemporary Orchestra Music Festival, performed by the Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra (conducted by Na-ra Jung) and the Korean National Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Chi-yong Chung).

Currently, Dong-Myung Kim teaches at Kyungpook National University, Pusan National University, and Kyungbuk Arts High School, and he is also a member of Ensemble Blanche. He continues to expand his musical horizons by composing contemporary, electronic, dance, and traditional Korean music.
